Spring Festival was my favorite Chinese festival when I was a child. At that time, I had a great time. Every year at that time I could dress new clothes, get lucky money from relatives and seldom receive criticism from my mother. Everything seems such wonderful. Spring Festival brings me joy each year, as it allows me to enjoy a lengthy break with my relatives. On New Year’s Eve, all family members gathered together. We rose early, and my mom began buying ingredients for the grand feast. I assisted her by carrying the groceries. Before the meal, our hometown had a custom: we offered a chicken to pay respects to our ancestors, expressing thanks and reverence. Once the dinner was ready, we ate cheerfully and chatted a lot. Later that night, we hung couplets on the doors and decorated the home. It was a wonderful time for the family to bond. Over the following days, I visited many relatives, which gave us a great opportunity to connect with one another.

The Lunar New Year occasion to the Chinese people. It lasts about the first four days of the year, during which people do not work except for the workers on duty. Students do not go to school, and shops are closed. Several days before the New Year, people begin to prepare. Farmers kill pigs, sheep, cock and hens. City dwellers buy meat, fish and vegetables. Houses are cleaned; couplets are posted on the doors. Colored full lanterns are hung at the gate. On the eve of the New Year, each family has its members gather to get together and eat a family reunion dinner. After the meal they watch TV until the clocks strike twelve. The Spring Festival last year was truly unique. My uncle and aunt returned from Shanghai, and our family was thrilled to celebrate the holiday with them. It turned out to be the most thrilling celebration among all the festivals I’ve experienced. On New Year’s Eve, Dad and Uncle chatted about their jobs while Mum and Aunt prepared meals in the kitchen. Grandpa rested, and I watched the New Year Gala on my own. Around six o’clock, we shared a special family feast. Everyone agreed that the dumplings tasted fantastic. On the first day of the lunar new year, we paid visits to relatives. In the afternoon, we went shopping on Jiefang Road. My uncle purchased several CDs by Jay Chou, as he is a huge fan of his music. The streets were packed with crowds, making the scene livelier than at any other time of the year. On the second and third days, we enjoyed a delightful weekend in the countryside. The Spring Festival is very important to Chinese people. In the past, people could not often have meat, rice or other delicious food. They could only eat these during the Spring Festival. So every year they hoped that the Spring Festival would come soon. Now, although people's life is much better, and we can eat delicious foods every day. People still like the festival. Because most people can have a long holiday, and we are free to go on a trip or visit our friends or have parties with our family.
