However, at the same time, growing concerns about food safety in China have attracted widespread attention. Recalling past food safety scandals, particularly the 2008 milk incident, consumers felt intense anger. In September 2008, a new wave of kidney problems emerged because baby formula was contaminated with melamine. This tainted formula caused over 6,000 infants to fall ill and resulted in three deaths. The supplier, Sanlu Group, was a well-known brand and a major player in China’s industry. The company reportedly knew about the issue for months but blamed the contamination on its milk suppliers. Who should bear the main responsibility for such serious incidents? On one hand, China’s complex food regulations share some blame. We must acknowledge that the monitoring system was often unresponsive, and the government departments responsible for oversight and enforcement had overlapping and unclear duties. On the other hand, food producers and suppliers failed to show adequate responsibility toward consumers. They cared only about their own interests and maximizing profits. In my view, everyone involved should assume greater responsibility, and relevant laws must be enacted and enforced. Only then can we enjoy healthy eating and a harmonious society.
