The Great Wall of China is a Chinese fortification built from the 5th century BC until the beginning of the 17th century, in order to protect the various dynasties from raids by Hunnic, Mongol, Turkic, and other nomadic tribes coming from areas in modern-day Mongolia and Manchuria.

Several walls, also referred to as the Great Wall of China, were built since the 5th century BC, the most famous being the one built between 220 BC and 200 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang; this wall was located much further north than the current wall built during the Ming Dynasty, and little of it remains.

The Great Wall of China was originally a project of Qin dynasty designed to keep out the nomadic Xiongnu invaders from the north. Some of the wall was built during the Qin, but most of it that we see today was constructed during the Ming dynasty.

The Great Wall is the world's longest man-made structure, stretching over a formidable 6,352 km (3,948 miles), from Shanhai Pass on the Bohai Sea in the east, at the limit between "China proper" and Manchuria (North east China), to Lop Nur in the south eastern portion of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Along most of its arc, it roughly delineates the border between North China and Inner Mongolia. See List of largest buildings in the world

The Great Wall stands as a powerful symbol of China. In the distance, this magnificent structure resembles a giant dragon twisting through the peaks. Stretching from Shanhaiguan in the east to Jiayuguan in the west, its length exceeds 13,000 units.

Just a short journey of a few dozen kilometers from Beijing brings you to the base of the wall. At first glance, the endless expanse looks like a massive snake resting on the mountain terraces. Constructed from stone and bricks, the surface is paved with uniform square blocks, creating a wide, tidy road capable of accommodating five or six horses walking side by side. Along the outer edge, parapets rise two meters high, featuring square openings for surveillance and shooting. Every few hundred meters, watchtowers rise, allowing ancient defenders to support each other. This is not merely a single wall, but a comprehensive defensive network including fortresses, beacon towers, barracks, and garrison towns.

Standing atop the Great Wall naturally evokes thoughts of the ancient laborers who constructed it. Each stone block weighs several kilograms. In those days, tools were scarce. It took the combined strength of countless workers, carrying these heavy stones on their shoulders up the steep slopes. The blood, sweat, and wisdom of these people created this unprecedented architectural wonder. Such a monumental project is truly a miracle!
